COMMON CHALLENGES
Real Problems. Practical Solutions.

IN DETAIL
Every Problem, Explained
01. IKEA PAX Wardrobe Not Level?
An uneven floor can affect the entire PAX installation. Cabinet frames may become distorted, and gaps between wardrobe sections become inconsistent.
The right solution depends on what is underneath your wardrobe. Hardwood, tile, and carpet each require a different installation approach:
- Hardwood, Tile & Hard Surfaces: We check the floor level across the entire wardrobe installation area, not just beneath individual cabinets. For minor irregularities, we use precision leveling shims and adjustable supports to create a stable, even foundation. For significant slopes or large multi-unit setups, we fabricate a custom leveled wooden platform to support the entire system as one continuous structure.
- Carpet & Soft Flooring: Carpet presents a unique challenge under heavy weight—especially once the wardrobe is filled with clothing. Over time, carpet fibers and padding compress, causing cabinets to settle unevenly and lose stability, preventing the system from looking like a single unit. Depending on the carpet and subfloor conditions, we use rigid load-distribution supports, construct a solid platform, or recommend removing carpet beneath the unit to establish a firm base.
Final Alignment & Installation: Once the foundation is properly prepared, we level each cabinet, securely lock the frames together, and anchor the system to the wall according to your specific wall construction and IKEA requirements.
The Result: A stable, properly supported PAX wardrobe system where all sections stand flush as a single integrated unit, built to stay level for years to come.
02. IKEA Doors or Drawers Won’t Line Up?
Crooked doors and uneven drawer gaps can make even brand-new furniture look poorly installed. For homeowners, adjusting PAX hinges can quickly become frustrating—navigating multiple adjustment screws and matching settings between left and right doors often leads to dead ends.
We approach front alignment as a systematic process:
- Cabinet Level & Plumb: First, we verify that the wardrobe cabinet is level and plumb. If the frame is leaning or twisted, hinge adjustments may reach their limits without correcting the underlying alignment problem.
- Frame Diagonals & Geometry: Next, we check the diagonal measurements to assess whether the cabinet frame is square. Any structural misalignment must be addressed before adjusting the doors or drawers.
- 3-Way Hinge Adjustment: Once the frame geometry is correct, we fine-tune the hinges using the adjustment mechanisms provided by the hardware, correcting door height, depth, and side-to-side alignment to achieve consistent gaps.
- Drawer Assembly & Rail Alignment: For drawers, we inspect the drawer box assembly for squareness and twisting. We also check that the runner rails are correctly positioned, parallel, and securely mounted before making the necessary adjustments.
The Result: Consistent, parallel gaps across doors and drawers, smooth operation, and a clean, professionally aligned appearance—without the frustration of troubleshooting complex hardware yourself.
03. Gaps Between IKEA Cabinets and the Wall?
Even when baseboards are out of the way, visible gaps often remain between factory IKEA cabinets—built with strict 90° angles—and walls that are rarely perfectly straight or plumb.
We resolve these uneven gaps using custom MDF filler panels:
- Custom Contour Fitting: We carefully scribe and trim MDF filler panels to follow the exact waves and irregularities of your drywall, eliminating hollow gaps along the edges.
- Centered Installation: Custom sizing allows us to balance and center your IKEA wardrobe system precisely between two walls for a clean, symmetrical layout.
- Built-In Look: By pairing side fillers with top trim, we turn standard flat-pack units into a seamless, custom built-in feature that fits your room.
The Result: A clean, flush transition from cabinet to wall with minimized visible gaps and dust-collecting spaces—delivering the appearance of high-end custom millwork.

04. Gap Between Your IKEA Wardrobe and Ceiling?
IKEA wardrobes come in standard heights, but homes don’t. The space left between the top of a wardrobe and the ceiling can make an otherwise well-planned installation feel unfinished and create a difficult-to-reach area where dust collects.
At North-WoodCraft, we don’t believe every gap should be covered the same way. The right solution depends on your ceiling height, wardrobe configuration, door system, and how you want to use the space.
We offer several approaches, each designed around a different priority:
- Custom Height Trimming — A Closer Fit: For compatible open closet systems without doors, we can modify the height of selected frames to achieve a closer floor-to-ceiling fit. This approach requires evaluating the cabinet construction to ensure the modification does not compromise its structural integrity.
- Custom Upper Panels, Molding & Drywall Enclosures — A Finished Architectural Look: When the wardrobe uses hinged or sliding doors, we preserve the clearance required for their operation. We can finish the remaining space with custom-fitted MDF panels, decorative molding, or a framed drywall enclosure prepared for painting. The design can either blend into the surrounding walls or become a deliberate architectural detail.
- Elevated Wardrobe with a Lower Storage Niche — More Useful Space: Instead of simply covering the gap above a shorter wardrobe, we can explore raising the cabinet system on a properly supported base to create an open niche underneath. This space can be designed for shoes, storage bins, or everyday items, while the upper section receives a coordinated finish.
Designed Around Your Priorities
Some homeowners want their wardrobe to disappear into the architecture. Others prefer additional accessible storage or a distinctive design feature.
We explain the practical differences, consider the room’s proportions and the wardrobe’s construction, and help you choose an approach that balances appearance, functionality, and long-term stability.
The Result: An IKEA wardrobe that feels intentionally integrated into your room—not simply assembled and placed against a wall. Every detail serves a purpose, and the finished installation reflects how you want your home to look and function.
05. Not Sure How to Secure IKEA Furniture to the Wall?
Standard hardware included with IKEA flat-pack furniture is designed for general application, but it often falls short under real-world wall conditions. Standard plastic anchors lack the proper grip in hollow drywall, and supplied screws are frequently too short to reach solid framing behind trim or air gaps.
We evaluate your wall structure and select mechanical fasteners based on the specific base material and layout:
- Bridging Baseboard Offsets: When baseboards create a gap between the wardrobe frame and the wall, securing brackets directly can warp the cabinet back panel. We bridge this distance using custom timber blocking, creating a solid, flush mounting surface.
- Direct Framing Anchorage (Studs & Joists): Whenever alignment permits, we drive structural fasteners directly into wall studs or framing members. If factory mounting points don’t align with stud spacing, we can add secondary structural fastening points inside the frame.
- Hollow Drywall Applications: When anchoring between studs, we replace basic plastic plugs with heavy-duty metal toggle bolts or threaded drywall anchors designed for high shear strength in hollow assemblies.
- Masonry & Aerated Concrete: For masonry, brick, or aerated concrete walls, we utilize specialized masonry screws and heavy-duty masonry anchors tailored to dense or porous materials.
The Result: A structurally anchored installation attached firmly to your wall assembly in full accordance with manufacturer tip-over prevention requirements and sound mechanical principles.
06. Baseboards Preventing Your IKEA Wardrobe From Fitting?
The most common reason an IKEA wardrobe won’t fit into an alcove—or leaves wide gaps along the sides—is a layout measured without accounting for baseboards. Measuring wall-to-wall at chest height often overlooks the fact that trim takes up 3/4″ to 1″ of critical space at floor level on each side.
IKEA cabinet structures are not engineered to be notched out or trimmed around baseboards. Modifying the bottom of the particleboard frame compromises its structural integrity and stability.
We resolve this by working precisely with the baseboards themselves:
- Clearance Assessment: We evaluate your room dimensions at floor level, identifying potential baseboard conflicts before assembly begins.
- Precision Trim Modification: We make precise, clean cuts in the baseboard right at the cabinet footprint, removing only the segment preventing a flush fit.
- Clean Finished Edge: The existing baseboard is terminated neatly against the outer side panel of the wardrobe, allowing the unit to slide flush against the wall.
The Result: Your wardrobe sits completely flush against the back wall with no awkward gap behind it, and the surrounding baseboards maintain a clean, finished transition.

07. Cutting Out for Switches or Outlets
Placing a wardrobe against a wall often covers up essential electrical outlets or light switches. Attempting to cut openings in thin backer boards by hand usually leaves jagged edges, while modifying side panels compromises the cabinet’s structural integrity.
We offer two clean, practical approaches depending on how you plan to use the power source:
- Precision Hole Saw Cutouts: Using a laser level for exact coordinates, we create clean, circular access points in the back panel using specialized hole saws. This prevents tear-out and chipping, giving you direct, neat access to switches or outlets inside the wardrobe.
- Low-Profile Extension Cord Routing: When you simply need power brought inside or nearby without modifying the wardrobe, we utilize a flat-plug extension cord. The ultra-thin plug fits neatly into the natural clearance gap behind the back panel, requiring no cutouts at all.
- Preserving Frame Integrity: We explicitly avoid making structural cutouts in outer side panels, ensuring the weight-bearing capacity of your IKEA frame remains completely intact.
The Result: Safe, convenient access to power for internal accessories or lighting with a clean, professional finish and without compromising the cabinet’s main support structure.
08. PAX Sliding Doors Jamming, Misaligned, or Not Closing Properly
Assembling and tuning IKEA PAX sliding doors requires exact structural tolerances. Even a fraction of an inch of frame tilt or diagonal distortion causes heavy glass or wooden panels to bind, rub against each other, or jump off their tracks, rendering soft-close mechanisms ineffective.
North-WoodCraft ensures smooth, silent, and precise sliding door operation:
- Frame Alignment & Squaring: We verify and align the overall plumb, level, and squareness of connected frames before installing upper and lower door tracks.
- Track Calibration & Panel Clearance: Upper and lower runners are mounted with exact depth clearance to prevent panel rubbing, frame sag, or tracking derailment.
- Roller & Soft-Close Tuning: We calibrate the height adjustment hardware, set proper panel gap spacing, and engage soft-closing dampers for controlled, silent door operation.
The Result: Smooth, effort-free door operation with evenly aligned panels and working soft-close dampening.
09. Poorly Assembled IKEA Furniture or Planning a Move
Repairs, Disassembly & Reassembly
Rushed initial assembly and improper teardown during a move are the leading causes of structural degradation in engineered wood furniture. Misaligned frames, binding drawers, damaged mounting holes, and loose structural joints severely impair both function and safety.
North-WoodCraft accepts contracts for auditing, repairing, disassembling, and re-installing IKEA systems, including projects left unfinished or incorrectly executed by previous installers:
- Inspection & Corrective Repairs: We evaluate existing installations—checking plumb, square, level, and anchor integrity—to isolate root causes. Issues such as frame gaps, sagging drawers, or binding doors are resolved through systematic re-leveling, frame squaring, structural joining, and 3-way hinge tuning.
- Component Reinforcement: If incorrect assembly damaged factory mounting points or particleboard panels, we reinforce connections using specialized restoration hardware or advise on targeted part replacements.
- Disassembly & Compatibility Assessment: We evaluate your specific furniture configuration before teardown. Modern frames with folding back panels usually disassemble cleanly with minimal wear, while older nail-down backer boards are processed using targeted extraction methods.
- Hardware Sorting & Labeling: All fasteners, cams, and hardware are fully removed, sorted into dedicated bags, and attached directly to their corresponding frame panels to guarantee a smooth reassembly.
- Optimized Whole-Unit Relocation: For local city moves, full teardowns aren’t always necessary. When doorway dimensions permit, we stabilize assembled cabinets using heavy-duty tension strapping and protective tape along top and bottom rails, preserving exact frame squareness while cutting down labor costs.
- Blanket-Wrap Protection: Disassembled panels and transported modules are wrapped in heavy-duty moving blankets to prevent chipping, surface scratches, and edge damage during transit.
The Result: You don’t always need to replace improperly assembled or moved furniture. We restore structural integrity, proper alignment, and smooth mechanical operation.

10. Customizing IKEA Interiors: LED Lighting, Accessories & Pull-Outs
Integrating lighting and KOMPLEMENT pull-out accessories requires structured electrical planning, clean wire routing, and exact adherence to layout geometry.
We complete interior customizations using sound practical methods:
- Power Routing & Driver Placement: We evaluate available outlets before installation. When possible, we advise placing a dedicated receptacle above the wardrobe for a seamless hookup. For outlets positioned behind the frame, we route a low-profile flat-plug extension cord (8–10 ft) up to the cabinet roof. Power drivers and smart hubs are secured out of sight to the top rail using mounting screws.
- Clean Wire Management: We avoid loose or exposed wiring inside the frame. Cables are routed beneath shelves using factory mounting clips and brought along the back panel, exiting through top structural wall-mounting knockouts directly to the drivers.
- Hinge & Accessory Clearance: Standard IKEA door hinges sit at fixed positions (typically the 3rd and 4th holes from top and bottom, with additional hinges on taller frames). While the IKEA planner restricts illegal placements, we cross-check all drawers, trouser hangers, and pull-out trays against actual hinge positions during assembly to correct design errors on-site and ensure complete clearance.
The Result: A fully integrated wardrobe with concealed cabinet lighting, neatly organized wiring, and smooth-operating interior accessories that clear every door hinge without obstruction.
11. Multiple IKEA Cabinets That Don’t Line Up?
Several cabinets should look like one coordinated installation, not a collection of separate boxes.
Large PAX wardrobes, BESTÅ arrangements, and other modular systems can reveal small differences in floor level, cabinet position, and door alignment.
These differences become more visible as the installation grows.
North-WoodCraft focuses on the complete arrangement: cabinet positioning, leveling, connections, alignment, and final adjustments.
Where appropriate, we can also add custom finishing elements to create cleaner transitions between the furniture and the surrounding space.
The result is a cohesive installation designed to work as a whole.

CUSTOM BUILT-IN FINISHING
Buying a wardrobe is only the first step. How long it lasts, how well it fits and how it looks all depend on how accurately it is assembled and anchored. Choosing the right specialist is what turns flat-pack boxes into a durable, custom-looking built-in.
Make IKEA Look Built-In
Standard IKEA cabinets can become part of a carefully finished interior.
A beautiful built-in appearance often depends on the details surrounding the furniture: side panels, filler strips, bases, trim, and transitions to the walls or ceiling.
North-WoodCraft combines IKEA installation with custom carpentry to create a more integrated result.
We can fabricate and fit suitable wood or MDF components, including filler panels, decorative trim, and finishing details prepared for painting.
Each solution is designed around the actual furniture, room dimensions, and installation conditions.
