A homeowner in Kildeer wanted to improve the appearance of exposed floor insulation beneath a converted four-season porch. North-WoodCraft developed a more complete finishing solution using a vapor-permeable protective membrane and custom wood trim.

Materials & Scope

Exterior finishing of an existing four-season porch, covering exposed spray foam insulation with a vapor-permeable protective membrane and installing additional wood trim.
The homeowner had previously converted an elevated deck into a four-season porch. Although the floor had been insulated with spray foam, the exposed insulation remained visible from the outside, particularly around the area beneath the fireplace.
The original request was to install an additional board to partially conceal the insulation.
After reviewing the existing conditions, North-WoodCraft recommended a more comprehensive approach: covering the exposed insulation with a breathable membrane designed to allow moisture vapor to pass through, followed by additional wood trim for a cleaner exterior appearance.
The result was a more consistent finish that better integrates the enclosed porch with the existing exterior structure.

About the Project

A Better Solution Than Simply Adding Another Board

The homeowner’s main concern wasn’t the insulation itself. It was how the exposed material affected the appearance of an otherwise finished outdoor structure.
Rather than covering only the most visible section with another board, we discussed an approach that addressed the larger area.
A vapor-permeable membrane was installed over the exposed insulation, and additional wood trim was fitted along the exterior perimeter.
This approach created a cleaner transition between the existing structure and the newly finished areas without unnecessarily rebuilding the porch.
